Join us for a showing of Letters from Iwo Jima. This film tells the story of the Battle of Iwo Jima between the United States and Imperial Japan during WWII, as told from the perspective of the Japanese who fought it. The film is directed by Clint Eastwood and is a companion to the film Flags of our Fathers which told the story of the Allied side of the battle of Iwo Jima.
Refreshments will be served.
Immediately following the film there will be a discussion led by a local veteran.

Presenter Alan Miller's cinematic and literary perspectives on the Vietnam War come from several decades of closely tracking that conflict from afar. As a newly minted USAF second lieutenant in 1961, Miller was stationed at a Strategic Air Command Base in Michigan and served as Security Operations Officer during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Mr. Miller holds a master's degree in History and has taught and written professionally. He grew up watching war films and has remained fascinated with their evolution. He has devoured all manner of books on Vietnam, including Karl Marlantes' novel Matterhorn.
Sign language interpreting will be provided at this program.
War Comes Home is a program of Cal Humanities in partnership with California Center for the Book.

916 Ink: Rio Youth Writer's Guild is a workshop for young people, age 6 to 17. Over the course of this free, twelve week program, local authors will work with students on various forms of writing, including: fiction; poetry; and songwriting.
